John T. Bretscher

Mr. Bretscher is a registered patent attorney with Cha & Reiter concentrating in telecommunications including cellular telephony, industrial process control, embedded software systems, computer architecture, and artificial intelligence/machine learning. He has managed large patent portfolios and directed their development to provide strategic advantages for clients. He has contributed to portfolios for standards-essential and open-source development projects as an engineer/contributor and as a managing attorney. He is a named inventor on 16 patents. Mr. Bretscher is associated with the firm as of counsel.

In addition to drafting and prosecuting patents, Mr. Bretscher is accomplished in producing business-relevant opinions on patents and technology.

Mr. Bretscher received his J.D. degree in 1999 from the Illinois Institute of Technology Chicago-Kent College of Law. He also holds a 2023 Master's Degree in Computer Science/Artificial Intelligence from DePaul University, an S.B. in Physics from the University of Chicago, and an Associate's Degree in Engineering Science from William Rainey Harper College.
